I remember a time in a class on a cold winter morning a Japanese girl came with a surgical mask & I thought, “Wow, people would go to extremes NOT to get sick in Japan.” Afterwards on a break I approached her & asked in a cynical manner: Why the mask? Are you afraid of catching a cold? And then she said, “In Japan you use it when YOU are under the weather & you don’t want other people to get sick. It is the polite thing to do.” Wow! That's a lesson I will never forget.

ReplyDeleteI think that the first one is something that everyone should remember not so much for the fact that the Japanese are so considerate but for the fact that it demonstrates that every point is capable of being viewed from a different perspective.

ReplyDeleteGreat post! As GB said, I think it is a great example of seeing everything from more than one viewpoint.
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful photos, Ruby! I love the second! As for the surgical masks in Japan, honestly speaking, I'm fed up with seeing them. I understand well what your classmate mentioned and I too think that it would be better to wear masks when you have a cold in order not to transmit the disease to others, however, I'd think many of us are too nervous.

what an amazing insight by mandino. and i didn't know that about surgical masks. in l.a., i see people wearing them regularly. i just assumed it was the smog, and maybe it is but probably not for everyone.
