Nest

My drawing of nest (picture with mobile)

"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more."

-   Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, 1818

Poetry is an artful form of expressing one's feelings be it love, anger, philosophy, nature etc. Poets have the power to bring about cultural change, to overthrow a government and to bring joy and hope to blighted lives.

The poet might express his content and happiness with life just after a pleasant walk or an ode to a cherished friend who has just passed away.  It could also have been written from the imagination purely for the sake of money to meet a deadline under the enormous pressure of having to earn his next meal.

Sometimes a verse can mean several things and not all poems are straight forward. What do you think?

Do you think trying to analyse and dissect the poem line by line to discern its meaning takes away the beauty you feel when you read it purely for the sake of enjoyment?

  3. Poems shouldn't be dissected to understand the meaning of each and every word ... rather, it must be felt from the soul ... poems convey the messages that lie deep within ... in short, they are the means by which a person can feel himself a part of the Supreme Bliss !!!

  6. Have you ever thought about becoming a professional artist? You do excellent work!

I don't think that every poem necessarily needs to be dissected, but sometimes it can help you understand it better when you do it.

  7. I think we have to look at poetry and try to discover what the poet was getting at. It's also interesting to look at the structure of the poem. So yes, dissect but not too much.

  8. Nice sketch Ruby. I like to get the essence of the poem as a whole but sometimes a line or two will grab me and then my impression of the poem is based on those lines.

  9. First Ruby, I think your birds and nest sketch is very good.
Second, I like to be able to understand poetry when I read it without having to try to figure what the poet means. I like the KISS principle (keep it simple and straight forward). What are your thoughts? - Dave

  10. Sprinkles, thank you. You are very kind, but I am not good at all :) I like to draw and post it for my blog! Thanks for your motivating comments!!

    Adrian, Thanks!

Green speck, agreed trying to understand it as a whole is much more enjoyable :)

Angela, please do write a post on this topic. I was not able to write down all my thoughts, sort of a block.

Red, that is interesting considering the structure of the poem.

Suzy, thanks! Yeah sometimes just a few lines change the whole perception of what the poet tries to say.

Dave, Thanks a lot!! I love such poems too dissecting a poem line by line takes away the beauty of reading poetry :)

    it is up to us to dig the ones we want;
And we may find something quite different when we return to it years later, Ruby

  19. Some people find their greatest enjoyment in breaking things down and figuring out why they work. I like to do such things when it involves math, but not with poetry.

  21. There was a time when people would look at the rhyme and rhythm of poetry.Indian poetry had very strict rules.
Poetry is an expression of intense feelings and emotions. It is to be read and felt, not dissected.
I can see a real artist in you.

  25. Poetry is about the heart, soul, mind, feelings etc. One must not try and strip a poem word by word and subject it to a detailed analysis to find the underlying meaning/meanings. If you get a nice feel and enjoy the poem you are an artist. If you dissect it you are a cold blooded scientist.

  26. Very nicely laid Ruby, and Poetry is a form of expressing feelings. Your drawing of the vogles in the nest on the branch again, I think very well made. Compliment.

  29. No, close analysis of a poem is not my goal. I love to 'understand' poetry, but the music, the words, the depth and feeling of a poem are more important to me.

  33. Hi Ruby! It has been a long absence, but things have been a bit hard: father 95, mother almost 91 doing radiotherapy, wife broke right elbow and I’m consuming some much needed holidays to take care of all this...

    Fabulous post!!

As far as Blogtrotter Two is concerned, it seems nobody is interested in St. Kitts, so maybe I should try something else. Anyhow, enjoy and have a great week or better a vacation, if still available!!!
